The Midwife's Curse

by Theresa Donnelly

Her heart will be pierced often
as a seamstresses pincushion.

Her bones grow leathery
as dead men’s fingers.

Her lips never taste the truth of love.

When eyes bruise the waxing moon
she will be sewn inside a mattress-

 of harvestmen and jagged thorns.

While outside-

the world will sigh under
the weight of its heavy garments.
